John Barradas
I am John (João) Barradas. I currently practice architecture in Ithaca, NY, a city of roughly 50,000 in upstate, 4 _ hour's drive north of New York City. My concentration is interior design of institutional buildings and residential design. On occasion, I have been a part time Assistant Professor of Architecture at Syracuse University and a Visiting Critic at the College of Architecture, Art and Planning at Cornell University. For over twenty years I worked for firms in this area as an architect and partner. In 200l I established my firm. Throughout my existence I have been influenced by sustainable conditions for the environment. As an elected President of a The Southern New York Chapter of The American Institute of Architects, I am an advocate for Smart Growth in Cities. I believe that the design profession has a responsibility to lead and influence affordable and sustainable living conditions for everyone in any station of life. In my opinion, a populated world should be sensitive to available resources. I have been a Rotarian since 1995 following Rotarian principles in business. My background is that of naturalized US citizen since the age of ten. I was born and spent my early childhood in Guinea/Bissau of Portuguese ancestry. My wife Martha Walker is the fine arts librarian at Cornell University Library. We have two boys, Seth (17) and Lucas (14). My discipline requires a centimeter depth and a kilometer width of knowledge. I endeavor to maintain a global perspective. Art and science can be the cultural phenomena to solve humanitarian issues through time. My practice is of unraveling fundamental questions wrapped in layers of communication, history, culture, technologies, natural conditions, space and time. These layers may be discernable only through incessant searches and experimentation by humans for humans while being aware of possibilities but not focused on conclusions. I love life and am humbled sharing how my talents and inclinations can matter in the lives of others. My wife reminds me that in the description above about my “whole life she and the boys warrant one sentence a piece.” We negotiate time.

Eu sou John (João) Barradas. Sou arquiteto em Ithaca, NY, uma cidade de mais ou menos 50.000 habitantes à quatro horas e meia de carro da cidade de Nova York. Meu foco é design interior de prédios institucionais e design para residências. Já fui Professor Assistente de Arquitetura na Syracuse University e Crítico Visitante da faculdade de Arquitetura, Arte e Planejamento da Cornell University. Durante vinte anos trabalhei em escritórios nesta área, como arquiteto e sócio. Em 2001, estabeleci meu próprio escritório. Por toda a minha vida fui influenciado por condições sustentáveis para o meio-ambiente. Como presidente eleito do The Southern New York Chapter of The American Institute of Architects (braço do Sul do Estado do Instituto Americano de Arquitetos), sou proponente do programa Smart Growth in Cities (Crescimento Inteligente de Cidades). Acredito que a profissão de designer carrega consigo a responsabilidade de liderar e influenciar programas que ofereçam condições de vida baratas e sustentáveis para aqueles com todos os níveis de vida. Na minha opinião, um mundo populado tem que ter sensibilidade à disponibilidade de recursos. Eu sou membro do Rotary desde 1995 e sigo princípios Rotarianos de negócios. Sou cidadão americano naturalizado desde os dez anos. Nasci e passei minha infância em Guiné/Bissau, de origem Portuguesa. Minha esposa, Martha Walker, é bibliotecária de Arte na Cornell University Library (Biblioteca da Universidade Cornell). Nós temos dois filhos, Seth (17) e Lucas (14). Minha disciplina requer um centímetro de profundidade e um quilômetro de conhecimento. Eu tento manter uma perspectiva global. Arte e ciência podem ser fenômenos culturais, solucionando problemas humanitários com o tempo.

Minha prática é desembaraçar questões fundamentais que estejam embrulhadas em camadas de comunicação, história, cultura, tecnologia, condições naturais, espaço e tempo. Essas camadas podem ser discernidas apenas através de procura constante e experimentação por seres humanos para seres humanos, ligados às possibilidades, mas sem se limitar a conclusões. Eu amo a vida e me trás humildade a oportunidade de dividir meus talendo e inclinações com o propósito de melhorar a vida de outras pessoas. Minha esposa me lembra que na descrição acima sobre a minha “vida inteira ela e meus filhos merecem uma sentença cada.” Nós negociamos o tempo.

TAMAR MELEN - Team Member

Oi, brasileiros! My name is Tamar Melen, and by the time you meet me in Brazil I will have turned 26 years old. For the past three years since I finished my undergraduate college degree at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York (which is also my hometown), I have been involved with various endeavors which focus on my number one passion - children. I have worked as an assistant teacher in a preschool class for two-year-olds, developed after-school and summer recreational programs for youth of under-served communities, and organized a music and arts enrichment program to expose kids with limited financial resources to all the benefits participation in the arts can have on positively developing their academic, social and behavioral skills. The young ones of today are, literally, the future of the world, and to me it only makes sense that we invest as much of our time, energy, and resources into making sure they have all the tools and advantages necessary to succeed in not only surviving, but also thriving.
Besides work, I have much on my plate of 'things to do' during the course of my life, many of which I have only just begun to explore, including: traveling all over the world; learning new languages (I can speak, to varying degrees: German, French, Spanish, and little bits of Hebrew, Japanese, and Swahili - and now Portuguese!); hiking and climbing mountains; and singing, dancing, playing and listening to all kinds of music (in anticipation of my visit to Brasil I have recently started playing tamborim with a samba band, Deixa Sambar - I was onstage for the first time at a Carnaval party - tudo bem!). Music has truly been a major guiding influence in my life, as I began playing piano at four years of age. To this day I am fascinated by the way the musical beat connects people across class, cultures, and continents, and nothing puts a smile on my face as quickly as a danceable rhythm. I look forward with great excitement to witnessing firsthand the joy and vibrance of music and dance in Brasilian culture - and hopefully also getting the hang of dancing samba just like the brasileiros!

Meu nome é Tamar Melen e quando vocês me conhecerem no Brasil, terei 26 anos. Desde que terminei a faculdade pela Cornell University, em Ítaca, Nova York (que também é onde eu moro), me envolvi em vários projetos relacionados à minha maior paixão--crianças. Trabalhei como professor-assistente em uma pré-escola, dando aulas para crianças de dois anos, desenvolvi programas recreacionais de verão e atividades para depois da escola para alunos de comunidades carentes. Também organizei programas de enriquecimento artístico e musical para crianças com poucos recursos financeiros, com o propósito de êxpo-las às artes e demonstrar os efeitos positivos que as artes podem exercer sobre sua vida acadêmica, social e seu comportamento. Os jovens são, literalmente, o futuro do mundo e eu acredito que seja extremamente importante investir nosso tempo, esforço e recursos para criar as ferramentas de que eles necessitam para sobreviver e prosperar.
Além de trabalhar, tenho um variado leque de “coisas para fazer sendo muitas destas atividades coisas que comecei a explorar recentemente, como: viajar pelo mundo, aprender novas línguas (eu falo Alemão, Francês, Espanhol, assim como um pouquinho de Hebreu, Japonês e Swahili--e agora Português!), caminhar e escalar montanhas, dançar, cantar, tocar e ouvir todos tipo de música (me preparando para a visita ao Brasil, comecei a tocar pandeiro com uma banda de samba, Deixa Sambar--minha primeira vez no palco foi em uma festa de Carnaval--tudo bem!). Música é uma grande influência na minha vida, desde que comecei a tocar piano com quatro anos de idade. Até hoje fico fascinado pela maneira com que batidas musicais conectam pessoas através de classes, culturas e continentes. Nada como um rítmo dançante para por um sorriso em minha cara. Eu aguardo ansiosamente ter a oportunidade de observar em primeira mão a alegria e vibração da música e danças da cultura Brasileira--e espero também conseguir sambar como os brasileiros!

JENNY ROSENZWEIG -Team Member

Driven by a passion for museums and learning, my career path has led me to the Upstate History Alliance where I am the Program Coordinator. The Upstate History Alliance is a non-profit organization, which provides support, advice and training to historical societies, museums, historians and others interested in history in upstate New York. As Program Coordinator, I am responsible for organizing all of our programs, events, conferences, and other activities and services that we provide throughout the year.

I live in Oneonta, NY, a small city in upstate New York, with my precious cat Delilah. I am lucky to have my mother, also my best friend, living nearby in a neighboring town. I grew up in Brooklyn, NY, a borough of the city of New York, until I moved to Oneonta in May of 2004. My older brother, Jeremy, still lives in Brooklyn and is a 7th grade English teacher. Jeremy is also getting married in July 2006, which I am very excited about.

Some of my other interests include films and reading, and of course SHOPPING. I have also (unsuccessfully) tried to grow a flower and vegetable garden for the past two years. Perhaps third time is a charm.

Movida pela minha 'paixão' por museus e aprendizado, minha carreira me levou ao Upstate History Alliance (Aliança Histórica do Norte do Estado), onde sou Coordenadora de Programação. A Upstate History Alliance é uma organização sem fins lucrativos que dá apoio, aconselha e treina sociedades históricas, museus, historiadores e a todos interessados em história no Norte do Estado de Nova York. Como Coordenadora de Programação, sou responsável por organizar todos os nossos programas, eventos, conferências e atividades e serviços oferecidos durante o ano inteiro.

Moro em Oneonta, uma cidade pequena localizada no norte do estado de Nova York, com meu minha querida gata Dalilah. Tenho sorte de ter minha mãe e minha melhor amiga por perto, já que as duas moram em uma cidade vizinha. Eu cresci no Brooklyn, NY, onde vivi até me mudar para Oneonta em Maio de 2004. Meu irmão mais velho, Jeremy, ainda mora no Brooklyn e é professor de Inglês para a sexta série do ginásio. Ele está para se casar em Julho deste ano, o que me causa grande felicidade.

Outros interesses meus incluem filmes e livros e, é claro, FAZER COMPRAS! Por dois anos eu tenho tentado, sem sucesso, fazer crescer um jardim de flores e horta de vegetais. Talvez a terceira tentativa dê certo!

ZOREN BULLOCK - Team Member

My name is Zoren Bullock. Our home is in Newfield, New York a small town located 120 kilometers south of Syracuse, New York and 370 kilometers west of New York City. I live with my fiancé and our two dogs in a house on 10 hectares of farm land and forest. I am a 34 year old senior systems engineer working for BorgWarner Morse TEC in Ithaca, New York. BorgWarner is a global supplier of automobile parts to most of the automobile manufactures in the world. I started four years ago as a test engineer, working with auto parts and their effects on engines. I now design engine components for European car makers and manage the customer programs for these components. I engineer valve timing components and work with our customers to supply them with prototypes and test data on these parts. It is very challenging work but also very exciting to know that your parts are in cars sold all over the world. I have been working on my MBA degree at Syracuse University and have two classes left to complete before graduation. My family lives in Jasper, New York a small town 1 hour west of our home. My parents own a hardware store that has been in our family for 3 generations. I have 3 brothers and a sister. Two are teachers, one an engineer, and the other a police officer. My fiancée Shelly is a social studies teacher at a high school in a town 50 kilometers from our home. We are planning our wedding for October 7, 2006. In our spare time we enjoy studying, running, auto-racing, traveling, gardening, and cooking. I especially love baking and barbeque! I am very excited about the GSE trip to Brazil and look forward to all I can learn and share from the fellowship with our hosts.

Meu nome é Zoren Bullock. Minha casa fica em Newfield, Nova York, uma pequena cidade à 120 quilômetros sul de Syracuse, à 370 quilômetros oeste da cidade de Nova York. Eu moro com minha noiva e nossos dois cachorros em uma casa de 10 hectares de floresta e campo. Eu tenho 34 anos e trabalho como engenheiro de sistemas sênior pela BorgWarner Morse TEC em Ithaca, Nova York. BorgWarner é um fornecedor global de partes de automóvel para a maioria dos fabricantes de automóveis do mundo. Eu comecei há quarto anos como engenheiro de testes, trabalhando com partes e seus efeitos em motores. Depois, passei a desenhar components para fabricantes de carros Europeus e virei gerente de programas para clientes para estes componentes. Sou engenheiro de componentes de timing para válvulas e trabalho com clientes fornecendo prototipos e dados de testes para estas partes. O trabalho é um desafio, mas é também um grande prazer saber que suas partes estão em carros vendidos por todo o planeta. Eu estou estudando para completar meu MBA pela Syracuse University e tenho que completar apenas mais duas classes para me formar. Minha família mora em Jasper, Nova York, uma cidade pequena à uma hora oeste de onde moro. Meus pais são donos de uma loja de ferragens que está na família há 3 gerações. Eu tenho 3 irmãos e uma irmã. Dois deles são professores, um um engenheiro e o outro policial. Minha noiva Shelly é professora de estudos sociais no colegial de uma escola à 50 kilometers de onde moramos. Planejamos nos casar no dia 7 de Outubro de 2006. Em nosso tempo livre, passamos tempo estudando, correndo, fazendo corridas de carro, viajando, cozinhando e fazendo jardinagem. Eu gosto principalmente de assar e fazer churrascos! Estou excitado de estar indo para o Brasil pela GSE e espero aprender muito com nossos anfitriões.

CHRISTINE LIGGIO -Team Member

My name is Christine Liggio. I live in Cooperstown, New York, a small town located about 4 hours north of New York City, which is home to The National Baseball Hall of Fame, Fenimore Art Museum, The Farmers' Museum a world-class opera company, and more. With only 2000 year-round residents and 100,000 visitors a year, Cooperstown, has become a major tourist destination for baseball and non-baseball lovers alike. The village is situated along a beautiful picturesque lake, Otsego Lake, which James Fenimore Cooper (America's first novelist) called Glimmerglass. I am a 29 year-old public relations manager for the New York State Historical Association and The Farmers' Museum, two premier cultural institutions located in Central New York. In this position, which I have held for the past five years, my primary responsibilities include: media relations, development of quarterly calendar and members' newsletter, and community relations. The museums offer me a challenging, rewarding, and enjoyable work experience. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in international business from Ithaca College in 1998.

I grew up in Queens, New York, a very culturally diverse area located on the perimeter of New York City. My family also had a vacation home in the country, where during my childhood I would spend my summers. So it began during my youth, my love for the both the country and city, traveling, different cultures, landscapes, and many outdoor pursuits. My family, which consists of my parents, twin sisters and me, moved up to a town outside of Cooperstown when I was in high school. We now live in different states and cities, but remain very close. While I am in Brazil on this exchange, my sister will have given birth to either my niece or nephew.

In my spare time, I enjoy traveling, reading, listening to music, playing guitar, attending cultural, visual and performing art events, running, boating, swimming, hiking, and other outdoor activities. I am looking forward to a rewarding personal and professional experience through this exchange and am honored to be a member of this GSE team.

Eu moro em Cooperstown, New York, uma cidade pequena localizada à 4 horas da cidade de Nova Iorque, que é a sede do National Baseball Hall of Fame, o Fenimore Art Museum, o Farmers' Museum, uma companhia de opera de classe internacional e outros. Com menos de 2.000 residentes e 500.000 visitantes por ano, Cooperstown virou uma atração turística importante tanto para os fãs de baseball como muitos outros. A cidade é situada à beira do lindo e pitoresco rio Otsego, que James Fenimore Cooper (considerado o primeiro novelista americano) chamou de “Glimmerglass” (brilho de vidro).

Eu me formei com diploma de bacharéu em negócios internationais pelo Ithaca College em 1998. Hoje, sou a gerente de relações públicas da New York Historical Association (Associação Histórica do Estado de Nova York) e do Farmer's Museum (Museu dos Fazendeiros), duas instituições culturais importantes localizada na area central do estado. Eu trabalho nesta posição há cinco anos. Minhas responsabilidades principais incluem relações com a mídia, desenvolvimento do calendário bimestral e do informativo para membros e relações com a comunidade. O museu me oferece desafios, mas também experiências gratificantes e prazerosas.

Eu cresci em Queens, Nova York, uma área de grande diversidade cultural, localizada no perímetro da cidade de Nova Iorque. Minha família tinha uma casa de campo, onde passamos os verões da minha infância. Foi assim que durante a minha juventude se desenvolveu meu amor pelo campo e pela cidade, por viajar, por culturas diferentes, paisagens e atividades ao ar fresco.
Minha família, que consiste de meus pais, minhas irmãs (gêmeas entre si) e eu, nos mudamos para uma pequena cidade ao lado de Cooperstown quando eu estava no colegial. Hoje em dia, moramos em cidades e estados diferentes, mas continuamos próximos. Durante a minha estadia no Brasil durante este intercâmbio, minha irmã dará a luz ao meu sobrinho ou sobrinha.
No meu tempo livre, eu gosto de viajar, ler, ouvir música, tocar guitarra, ir à eventos culturais e de arte visual, ver performances, correr, andar de barco, nadar, caminhar e fazer outras atividades ao ar livre. Estou ansiosa para participar deste intercâmbio. Acredito que será uma grande experiência profissional e pessoal e estou honrada de fazer parte do time GSE.
